Agnes Moorehead

The Moorehead family came to Reedsburg in 1919, and John (Agnes' Father), a Presbyterian minister, assumed the pastorship of the First Presbyterian Church. Mollie (Agnes' Mother)  who was musically talented, served as organist, choir director and vocalist. In the 1920's the family left Reedsburg and assumed a pastorate in Ohio, where in 1938, John suffered a fatal heart attack, and died. Mollie came back to Reedsburg after Dr. Moorehead's death. Mollie was a special lady to everyone in Reedsburg. She often had famous people visiting her from time to time. Mollie passed away in 1990 at the Sauk County Heath Care Center. Agnes graduated from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, in 1923 with an AB degree. She attended the University of Wisconsin in 1924 and completed her MA work in drama and public speaking. She taught English and Public Speaking at Soldiers Grove High School. In 1927 she entered the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. She came to Reedsburg often to visit her mother. On October 3, 1971, as Reedsburg's most famous citizen, she was the guest speaker at the dedication of the new city hall complex. Agnes spoke of experiencing a "feeling of nostalgia" whenever she visited Reedsburg. She died in 1974 and is interred in Dayton, Ohio, with the remains of Dr. John Moorehead, Mollie and Margaret.
